ok, well, i've made it so it no longer locks up when you select journey onward w/o saved games. however, the operation is rather klugy - it will just refresh the main menu the first time you click on it, and then the second time it will bring up the continue_dialog.gas UI and then return you to the main menu. the ideal scenario would be to simply hide the journey onward button if there are no saved games. i added some code to TRY to accomplish this, but it does not work.

i have not found a way to test to see if there are any saved games. that would be the magic bullet here; that would make it so we could dynamically hide/reveal the journey onward button.

final mods to front-end menus. the remaining errors will probably stay around; would be too much work to fix, and doesn't affect retail, but we'll see. this is definitely good enough for beta and will give the player a better ui experience than what (s)he has in alpha.

load game screen. this was VERY tricky - had to mangle the "single_player" UI (which we're no longer using anyway). also, the scroll bar wouldn't work for the load game screen so i had to write my own page up/page down buttons.

this also includes the change to the char select screen requested by deborah; there is no longer a "left" arrow - just a right arrow, and you can click on the "change portrait" text as well as the portrait itself to change the portrait.

at the moment, the options page is unchanged, as is the "about" page.

it is quite possible to generate errors in dsmod by clicking on things multiple times. solution: don't do that. these errors don't show up in retail.

question for everyone: the fade effect from the main menu to the sub-menus - keep it? lose it? should other screens be fading in and out? is it worth spending a lot of time to get that to work? (was very tricky to get just that first screen to work)

this is all i'm planning on doing for m5 - please test and let me know if you like, don't like, whatever.

fixes throne-room portrait, fixes centering of char selection UI, white bar on bottom of screen; adds a few minor enhancements and UI elements to the char selection. this should be final.

    todo:
    redo load game ui
fix return to previous from load game ui (currently not working)
fix return to previous from char select after going to select map and returning from there

    draft of char select. todo:

remove "change portrait" text - doesn't work there.
move journey onward back to the right side
add "change portrait" left/right arrows below gender selection & parchment

this should square things a little better, although it will still be a little "off" to the right - but i think it works fine that way

some stuff that i forgot to commit last night, plus some stuff for the char select screen.

the char select screen could use a better background for the controls than that generic brown outline. i'll probably use our parchment texture to come up with something. there are still bugs going to/from certain screens; need to transition the states properly.

    RevisionAuthorDate
    r20jesses2008-06-25 23:30:36 -0500 (Wed, 25 Jun 2008)

some mouseover goodness along with some of the fading code

still much work to be done to get the state right in all cases - going from screen to screen breaks things

good enough for testers to start or load a game, but will break if you try anything non-linear. enjoy the pretty graphics though
